Ralf Rangnick lashes at media for suggesting signing bonus for Erling Haaland

According to a tweet by UtdReport quoting the press conference (h/t Fabrizio Romano), Ralf Rangnick raged at the media for suggesting that he would get a signing bonus for convincing Erling Haaland to join Manchester United. He spoke in his first press conference after officially taking the role as the interim manager.

Rangnick will be at the managerial helm till the end of the 2021-22 season, after which he will become a consultant for the club for two more years. However, he has not ruled out the possibility of extending his stay as the coach following this term.

Recently, Bild (h/t Sun) claimed that the German would get £8million as a bonus if he helped the club to get Haaland. It even claims that the former’s relationship with the 21-year-old’s father played a part in the appointment.

But Rangnick has now emphatically denied these claims.

Who would have thought?

The 63-year-old put the media at their places after lashing out at them. His arrival is one of the best decisions the Glazers have taken in a long time and such clauses cannot be the foundations for it. It would be right to assume that our owners would not include such a clause in his deal, and the German’s words have now cleared the air.

The Norwegian striker is one of the best players in the world right now. Signing him would be a bonus for any club and it would not be wrong to want our club to take some extra measures to steal a march in the race to sign him- if we are involved in it at all.

But such a blatantly obtuse clause would not be the way to go about it. And it’s not the way we have taken as well, which would come as a relief to our fans.

The media is known for generating stories to fuel speculations that would benefit them in the process. Be it in any other sport and any other era, it is not uncommon to come across stories that barely have any basis in reality.

As the transfer window is on the horizon, we can expect to see similarly audacious pieces. It is on us to do some critical thinking and research before digesting such stories as they come.

Rangnick will manage his first game for United as they gear up to face Crystal Palace in the Premier League. It will be interesting to see who he trusts to start up front, with United not having a shortage of attackers anymore.
