Rangers will not sign Mikey Moore permanently next summer after the 18-year-old today agreed a new long term contract with Tottenham Hotspur. The highly rated winger has committed his future to the Premier League club despite having family ties to Rangers and expressing affection for the club in interviews. His decision ends any faint hope the Ibrox side had of turning his current arrangement into a permanent stay. Mikey Moore signs for Tottenham long term.

Moore’s new deal with Spurs shows the London side’s faith in his potential. The teenager has been on the radar of several top sides but Tottenham have moved quickly to secure his future. The club believe he can break into their first team in the coming years. For Rangers this means their current loan deal remains the only spell they will enjoy with the England youth international.

He has yet to make his competitive debut for the Glasgow giants because of delays in securing international clearance. That paperwork issue has frustrated both the player and Rangers supporters eager to see him in action. It also raises questions over how much impact he can have this season if the process drags on. The club’s management still expect him to contribute once available but time is already ticking.

Moore’s admission that his family are lifelong fans of the Ibrox side had fuelled speculation he might seek a permanent move north. That has now been put to bed with this new contract. Mikey Moore signs for Tottenham long term and Spurs have no intention of selling one of their brightest young talents. They view his time in Scotland purely as part of his development.

Rangers fans will naturally feel disappointment. The thought of a skilful young winger developing at Ibrox and staying beyond his loan was appealing. However the reality is Rangers cannot compete financially with the ambitions and resources of a top six English side. The hope now is to enjoy his quality for the remainder of the campaign.

When clearance comes through Moore will join a squad still adjusting to new additions. His arrival will add depth and creativity to a side that has lacked consistency in the wide areas. If he impresses during his loan spell he can leave a lasting impression on the supporters even if his future lies back in London.

For now Rangers know exactly where they stand. Mikey Moore will wear their shirt for this season only. Tottenham will have him back next summer and any dreams of a permanent move have ended before his debut has even taken place. The focus now must be on getting him on the pitch and making the most of the months ahead.
