Stoke City fans will be wary that Tyrese Campbell could well be on his way to departing the club in the summer transfer window with a new deal not agreed - and Rangers could take advantage.

Campbell has been at the Potters since he was 16, and after impressing at youth level he became a member of the first-team in 2018, where he has made over 150 appearances since.

His season hasn't quite gone how he would have hoped, and as a result Campbell may well look to leave the club for a fresh start in different surrounding.

And with Rangers reportedly hot on his heels for a free transfer agreement come the summer, they could well feel hopeful in their bid to sign the striker.

Despite featuring frequently for Stoke in the past few years, Campbell has found the first-team picture hard to crack this season.

A joint-best nine-goal haul in 2022-23 saw Campbell somewhat back to his best after a topsy-turvy few years at the Bet365 Stadium, but he's massively struggled during the current campaign - mainly with injuries in September and December.

Niall Ennis has since come into the club from Blackburn Rovers and scored against his former side earlier in February, meaning that Campbell is likely to have slipped down the pecking order having not appeared in Stoke's last three league matches.

It looks as though Campbell could be in need of a new club come the end of the campaign, and that could most likely come at Rangers.

With Rangers signing a multitude of strikers in the summer under Michael Beale, recently sacked by Sunderland. only Cyriel Dessers has been somewhat of a success at the club.

Sam Lammers was loaned back out at the first possibility after some haphazard performances, whilst Kemar Roofe cannot stay fit at Ibrox and Danilo remains injured after a huge move from Feyenoord.

Dessers needs backup and whilst the six-month loan signing of Wolves striker Fabio Silva covers that for now, Campbell could well turn to Glasgow as his next move in a move that suits both parties.

And despite those struggles this season where he has spent plenty of time on the treatment table, there is still a player in Campbell that the Ibrox outfit could potentially nurture into a prolific goalscorer, if he's given the opportunities in and around the 18-yard box by team-mates.

A report from Football Insider earlier this month suggested that Rangers were interested in signing Campbell on a free transfer this month, with the forward’s contract expiring at the end of the season.

Campbell was the subject of an £850,000 bid from Italian top flight side Hellas Verona on January deadline day, though Stoke turned that down and at least until the end of the season, he will remain on the books at the Potters.

He will walk as a free agent should Stoke fail to agree terms on a new contract; but crucially, with Rangers being outside of the English footballing pyramid, clubs from abroad can agree a pre-contract deal from the start of January with less than six full months remaining on a contract - and they therefore could steal a march by signing him.

Campbell’s dad, former Everton striker Kevin, stated that Rangers previously held an interest in Campbell back in January 2020, though he stayed at Stoke City.

Campbell told Football Insider: “I know that there were talks with Rangers because he could talk to them.

"I believe that he spoke to Rangers but he felt that at this time in his career and his development the best place was Stoke.”

Stoke could regret letting Tyrese Campbell depart on a free transfer

It's always sad to see a player not quite live up to the potential that they first promised but Stoke will see exactly that in Campbell.

Linked with Premier League moves before, the 24-year-old hasn't hit the heights expected of him, perhaps due to injury and fitness struggles, but that doesn't mean he's not a Championship level striker.

The fact that other clubs and Rangers - a team in the last 16 of the Europa League - are interested in his services should ring alarm bells in Staffordshire.

Campbell could be good enough to start for Stoke and if a move away helps him realise his potential, it'll be another bittersweet pill to swallow if he makes a success of himself elsewhere.
