Rangers defender Ridvan Yilmaz cannot be written off after a difficult start to his career at the club, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 21-year-old has struggled to make an instant impact following his arrival at Ibrox over the summer, but he is likely to get an opportunity to shine over the coming months due to the congested fixture schedule.

Yilmaz signed a five-year contract with Rangers back in July after completing an initial £3.4 million move that could rise to £5m with add-ons from SuperLiga outfit Besiktas.

“I am delighted to be joining a club the size of Rangers and am really looking forward to meeting my new team-mates,” said the Turkey international upon his arrival in Glasgow.

“This is a club who have shown they can compete against some of the best teams in Europe, and I am really excited by the challenges we have ahead of us.”

However, Yilmaz has started just twice in all competitions for Rangers in the opening weeks of the campaign and was criticised back in his homeland during the recent international break.

Besiktas chief Ceyhun Kazanki has claimed the youngster departed his boyhood club ‘too early’, while one pundit stated he was ‘carried like a bag’ in Turkey’s recent Nations League fixtures.

What has Jones said about Yilmaz?

Jones believes that it is far too early to pass judgement on Yilmaz’s time at Rangers and that he will be ‘integrated more’ into the first team before now and the start of the Qatar World Cup.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “You can’t be writing him off after two months when he’s 21; completely new surroundings, different style of football, different culture.

“And I’m sure between now and December, we will start to see him integrated more.”

When could Yilmaz get his next opportunity?

Rangers saw off Hearts 4-0 in their first game of a hectic October, and Yilmaz was once again forced to watch the victory unfold from the bench as an unused substitute.

Yet Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s charges face a further eight fixtures in all competitions this month, with Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Liverpool one of the most exciting of them all.

Yilmaz, though, will surely be targeting the subsequent home fixture against St Mirren and the League Cup encounter against Dundee as his opportunities to shine.

The two games at Ibrox may see Van Bronckhorst rest some of his key players due to the level of opposition and limited rest time, possibly handing Rangers’ fringe stars a rare chance from the off.
