Rangers are now ‘starting to think’ about alternative options to Nicolas Raskin after becoming frustrated in their pursuit, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Gers are believed to be in the market for a new midfielder ahead of tonight’s deadline but may have to turn their attention away from the Standard Liege star due to his club’s high demands.

What is the latest news involving Raskin?

A recent report from the Daily Record revealed that Raskin is a player who has appeared on Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s radar in the closing stages of the transfer window.

The Ibrox outfit have extra funds to spend after beating PSV Eindhoven to book their place in the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2010/11.

And Liege manager Ronny Deila, who used to be in charge of Celtic, has stated that Raskin needs to ‘make a decision’ about his future amid growing speculation over his next move.

“We are talking to him, and he is honest with us about his position,” said Deila. “He needs to make a decision about his future, and we need that too.”

However, Belgian journalist Bob Feasen has tweeted that ‘Raskin will not move to Rangers FC this summer’ with reports suggesting Van Bronckhorst’s charges refused to meet Liege’s £5 million asking price.

What has Jones said about Rangers?

Raskin has entered the final year of his contract at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne, and therefore, Rangers are understandably reluctant to splash out such a sizeable figure on him.

As a result, Jones has been told that the reigning Scottish Cup holders are beginning to assess other options that they could bring in to strengthen their engine room.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “Someone told me that they are now starting to think about alternate options because they’re worried that it might not happen.”

Who else could Rangers sign?

Ross Barkley has recently had his Chelsea contract terminated by mutual consent, leaving him searching for a new club for the 2022/23 campaign.

And reliable CBS reporter Ben Jacobs

Barkley endured a difficult three-and-a-half-year spell at Stamford Bridge, registering just 23 goal contributions in 100 appearances, failing to live up to the promise he showed in the early stages of his career.

The England international is still in his prime years, though, and if Van Bronckhorst can get him back to his best, Barkley could be an astute acquisition, especially on a free transfer.
