Rangers trial former £10M Man Utd full back free agent

Rangers gave a trial today to former Manchester United and Norwich fullback Brandon Williams, with that position, as Ibrox Noise illustrated in recent content, very much a touch vulnerable.

The versatile defender, who operates mainly at LB but can also cover RB as well, is currently without a club having been released by Utd, but at 24 was valued around £10M as recently as two years ago.

Without too much of an injury history to speak of, the fullback is of good physical condition and is said to have been impressive in the bounce game for the B team on Tuesday.

Having been capped at England U21, Williams is a player with a tonne of ‘what might have been’ about him, and it should be added that he has around 50 Premier League appearances so is clearly of the right quality should Rangers consider this a worthy free agent addition.

The club badly needs new additions at FB – just James Tavernier on the right, and a host of issues on the other side mean there is very much a vacancy for a versatile fullback to join and be deployed on either side.

Williams is very much top tier quality but hasn’t had the break in football to really set his career on fire. One thing we know is that as a Man Utd youth, he knows Rangers, like Utd, are must-win, so he’s very much at home with that kind of pressure.

He also has two Champions League appearances.

Is he one to be arriving in Govan permanently?

Well, time will tell, but we could sure use someone in that position…
