Reports down south claim Birmingham City are aiming to sign Rangers duo Kieran Dowell and Ben Davies on permanent deals this summer, with a £3.5M combined fee being touted to secure their services from Ibrox.
Both players are currently on loan at St Andrew’s, and if these links are on the money, it looks like the Blues have seen enough to want them full-time. From a Rangers perspective, this would be another solid move in Rangers’ summer clearout, shedding yet more of the deadwood inherited from previous managers.
Dowell, as we’ve said many times on Ibrox Noise, just never worked out at Rangers. A free signing from Norwich, he barely kicked a ball for the club, and injuries robbed him of any chance he had to make a dent in the squad. Even when fit, he struggled to impose himself, and was miles off the pace needed to cut it in a Rangers shirt. A decent Championship player? Sure. But nowhere near good enough for the pressures of Ibrox. If Birmingham want to keep him, they’re welcome to him.
Ben Davies, meanwhile, has long been a poster boy for the ‘wrong player at the wrong club’ syndrome. Signed by Gio from Liverpool for a hefty £4M, the Englishman never settled and consistently looked uncomfortable in the Rangers backline. Lightweight, nervy, and prone to dreadful positioning, Davies’ spell in Govan was marked more by errors than excellence. His loan to Birmingham has given him a new lease of life, and evidently, they see value in tying him down permanently. Again – if they’re happy with him, we certainly won’t stand in the way.
A combined £3.5M for the pair might not seem like much, but considering what they’ve offered Rangers in return for their wages, it’s actually tidy business. Davies’ sale would recover most of what we paid for him, and Dowell was a freebie anyway, so any fee for him is pure profit.
This is the kind of ruthless squad management Ferguson needs to keep implementing – moving on players who aren’t good enough, don’t contribute, and don’t have a future at the club.
So yes, Brum can take them both. And if they want to bump the price up a bit while they’re at it, all the better.
