In a recent report, Birmingham Mail revealed that Rangers talent Glen Kamara could leave this January amid prior interest from Aston Villa. It is understood that the Finnish midfielder could be available for a fee between £10m and £15m this winter which could be appealing for the Villans if they still want the player.

Kamara’s Up And Down Season In Scottish Football

The 26-year-old has shown a few flashes of how good he can be but has struggled to be consistent with his performances at the heart of Rangers’ midfield. Kamara has made ten appearances for the Glaswegian outfit this season, picking up one assist in the process across multiple competitions.

The Tampere-born talent had only managed to average 0.7 interceptions per 90 minutes in the Scottish Premiership. He has even been tidy with his ball distribution based on his pass success rate of 87.5% in the Scottish first division (stats via whoscored).

His current deal at the Ibrox Stadium will run out in the summer of 2025. Therefore, Aston Villa would have to make a fair offer if they decide to go back in for him next year.

Should Aston Villa Boss Steven Gerrard Move In For Kamara?

Kamara is a solid tackler of the ball and can make some timely interceptions for his side. However, he has struggled to perform at his best over the 12 months. Still, there is no denying that the Finnish sensation can be a decent anchorman in midfield when he is playing with confidence on the field. He is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also play as a box-to-box midfielder or in the number ten position if needed.

Aston Villa need more cover in their midfield after losing Boubacar Kamara to a serious injury recently. Furthermore, Douglas Luiz is on an expiring contract at Villa Park which means that Steven Gerrard would soon need to replace him if he fails to tie the Brazilian down to a new contract.

Kamara could serve as a good, short-term replacement for Luiz as long as he can find some form in the Premier League. However, based on how the Rangers midfielder has been playing of late, the Villans would be wise to opt for someone more proven and not risk moving in for the player next year. However, he could prove to be a good backup option if the West Midlands club fail to land any of their other midfield targets this January or at the end of this campaign.
