Here we are again, caught up in the whirlwind of Rangers takeover drama, akin to those nerve-racking last-minute corner kicks. The fans have been abuzz in anticipation of a big announcement from CEO Patrick Stewart at the upcoming fan event. Yet, Chris Jack from the Rangers Review has halted any hopes of a takeover proclamation at the meeting (Jack, 2025), stating unequivocally that even though Stewart will be in attendance, the 49ers Enterprises saga will not be publicly unveiled. The closest we’ll get to a ‘done deal’ is just another boring ‘awaiting the outcome of due diligence’ moment.
Fans are rightly wondering why there’s so much excitement around a project that has no confirmation and is not likely to be confirmed any time soon. This project is different because Andrew Cavenagh is trying to buy up to 51% of Rangers and control our club. It’s a strange ‘long penalty shootout’—kind of like the ‘long penalty shootout’ in the game against Hibernian at Hampden a few years back. And until that penalty shootout is over, we’re not going to know which way it’s going to go. You can stop worrying about two things for now, though: this isn’t a ‘Sandy Easdale’s shares’ affair, and it isn’t ‘Leeds United all over again.’
Let’s talk facts. Patrick Stewart’s arrival at the top of the Rangers’ executive food chain was a monumental shift for the club (Jack, 2024). Whereas past chairmen exercised more of a financial and less of a day-to-day decision-making control over the club, Stewart has no such limitations. He’s in charge, and he answers to the club’s new American-led ownership group. And Stewart, we’re told, has been very keen to have this Q&A session with the club’s fans. So, even if he has nothing new to say, and no “all-clear” to signal on the takeover, you’re getting a level of transparency between captain and fans that doesn’t exist between clubs and supporters in—how do we put this?—a normal football world.
What’s the skinny? Don’t expect Patrick Stewart to say that a takeover is complete at the fan get-together. Chris Jack has thoroughly debunked that story (Jack, 2025). The real win would be when the principals of the deal actually sign on the dotted line. Until that happens, just take a deep breath and chill. Because how many times have we been in this exact same situation? This is like a great football match that hasn’t quite ended, in which anything can still happen.
