Rangers stumble in the dark again as another random LB surfaces

Article image:Rangers stumble in the dark again as another random LB surfaces

Rangers interest in Anass Salah Eddine has resurfaced and it tells a story of a club that still struggles to secure the correct left back. Roma signed the Dutch defender from Twente but within six months he has been placed on the transfer list. Rangers watched him in the past but moved elsewhere. Now however the failed chase of Nobel Mendy and ongoing uncertainty around Ridvan Yilmaz has created another gap that Rangers need to fill. That explains why £6M-rated Anass Salah Eddine has appeared again on the radar.

The reality is simple yet brutal. Rangers failed to land a convincing left back for years. Borna Barisic offered spells of form but his time is over. Ridvan showed glimpses yet injuries and rumours leave his future in question. Rangers got Jefte but he failed. They then looked at Mendy and failed. Each time the club appeared to stumble with no plan B. Therefore it makes sense that the Dutchman has returned to the agenda.

Reports from Italy confirm Roma want to shift him and Rangers appear willing to listen. Anass Salah Eddine is versatile and can cover more than one slot. He plays left back, left wing back and midfield. That kind of flexibility suits Russell Martin even if his system still baffles supporters. However questions remain about his level. If he cannot make the grade in Serie A will he shine in Scotland. Yet Rangers need bodies and time is against them.

The problem is Rangers always seem to get linked when a club wants rid of a player. That trend does not inspire confidence. Roma want to sell him so suddenly Rangers get mentioned. It happened with countless others. Moreover the fee could be steep. Roma paid good money and will not want a big loss. A loan with option to buy looks more realistic yet Rangers funds remain unclear. But a loan, AGAIN?!

Still the logic is sound. Rangers need a left back. Salah Eddine is available. He can play more than one role. His age gives scope for development and he fits the profile of what Kevin Thelwell has sought before. Whether he truly raises the level is the real debate. Supporters want a proven quality addition not another gamble.

Rangers’ interest in Anass Salah Eddine shows the same pattern that frustrates fans. Links emerge, expectations build and then reality bites. The club must act with conviction and not settle for names that others cannot use. The window closes soon and Rangers cannot afford another failure at left back.
