Rangers should try sensational move for legendary Thiago Silva | OneFootball

We’re pretty sure you all know that one of the greatest defenders in history is about to be a completely free agent, and while we’re not immediately saying Thiago Silva for Rangers, we have many times before signed great defenders in their more senior years and it’s worked out ok.

Frank de Boer was one, Bruno Alves another, and the idea of bringing in Silva for maybe a year’s contract might not be the flight of fancy it may sound. We got Caniggia after all.

The boy has made his money in football, he’s a very rich chap, and while there are media reports claiming he’s going to Fluminese (back to where his youth career began) he’s evidently not seeking riches in the sport any more.

Silva is still, 100%, an absolutely world class defender and at his age, 39, he has basically no market value at all – he’s literally one of the most lucrative free agents in the game in recent years.

Is it beyond Rangers to bring him in for a season to help shore up our defence?

Connor Goldson just doesn’t ‘have’ it any more (if he ever did) and Leon Balogun and John Souttar are the only two alpha defenders left.

There’s no denying if Fluminese can ‘afford’ Silva, Rangers could too.

The big carrot here of course is Champions League – Silva was denied a crack at that this season with Chelsea dismally underperforming for the past two campaigns, but his ability at the club was never in doubt.

He is indeed 100% to move on this summer – what a coup it would be for Scottish football, for Rangers, to secure his signature and get a player of that calibre even for one season.

This is as good as a defender gets, widely-regarded as maybe the best defender in football over the past 15 years, and a move north to Rangers might not be out of the question.

One more crack at European football before he hits his 40s and finishes in his homeland of Brazil – the fact he’s not signed any precontract there suggests it’s far from a done deal.

Could Rangers hijack this one?
