Rangers should make free agent move for former £20M striker

With Rangers definitely lacking a striker of gravity up front, and the board and Director of Football Recruitment Nils Koppen failing manager Philippe Clement rather much in January on that front, there remains a possibility of bringing one in as a free agent.

With football free agency, once a free agent, any club can sign you up at any time, regardless of transfer windows, and enhance their chances.

And we have to say, Rangers could do a lot worse than former French-born Algeria international Andy Delort, who at 32, still has a few years ahead of him and has just left Qatar with an admittedly outstanding record there.

This is a guy who can score.

Last season in France with Nice it was 6 in 14 league appearances, the season prior it was 20 goals and 5 assists in 40.

He can assist and he can score, at, clearly, some of the highest levels. 85 goals and 32 assists in 259 Ligue 1 appearances gives some idea of his credibility, and he is experienced all over the world with spells in South America and England as well as that 9 goal contributions in 12 for Umm Salal FC this season.

In short, he’d be a heck of a decent bet to take on as a free agent till the end of the season.

Wages? He was on £45K in Qatar but at his age he won’t expect that any more, and he wouldn’t be expecting a top five league either, despite shining in France for so long.

At just under 6ft he can also play the target man, with a reputation of incredibly clever movement and exploiting the movement of others around him to find space – he could be a very shrewd addition…

Market value? About 4 years ago he was valued in the circa £20M range, but only actually went for about £10M and that was Montpellier to Nice.

He’s now free.

Worth a punt?
