Rangers’ new owners get serious over stunning £10M bid

There has been much debate around the potential deal for Crystal Palace winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi and Rangers’ real intentions in this chase. While certain outlets have suggested there is no obligation to buy included in any agreement, that in itself doesn’t mean an option to buy is not on the table. The two are entirely different things. One binds Rangers to purchase no matter what, while the other gives them the power to choose—and that’s where this move could get very interesting.

An option to buy gives Rangers the breathing space they need. It allows them to trial the player for a season without being tied down to a long-term financial commitment up front. Rak-Sakyi has pace, flair and unpredictability, but he’s untested in Scottish football. If Russell Martin gets a full season out of him and likes what he sees, Rangers can make the move permanent. If not, they’ve lost nothing. This would be a much smarter play than an obligation, especially for a club whose transfer strategy must be measured and realistic.

Reports of a potential £10 million clause have raised eyebrows across the fanbase, and rightly so. That figure is eye-watering by Rangers standards. But it’s also important to stress that this number would not come into play until next summer. It’s not a cash-up-front situation. It’s more of a safety net for Palace—if Rak-Sakyi explodes at Ibrox, they know there’s a fixed fee ready. But if he struggles, Rangers walk away with no regrets and Palace take him back.

There’s also a psychology at play here. An option to buy shows confidence from Rangers. It says: “We believe in this player, and we’ll prove it.” Rak-Sakyi, meanwhile, will be motivated to deliver every week knowing that his next career step could hinge on his performances this season. It creates a win-win scenario with little risk for Martin.

In today’s market, £10 million is elite money for Rangers. It would represent one of the biggest investments in club history. But with no obligation involved, the risk is nullified. This could be a savvy move by the Ibrox side, securing a potential game-changer on their terms, with all the upside and none of the risk—at least until next summer rolls around.
