Rangers’ first appearance in the Champions League group stage since 2010 is one they are never likely to forget, as much as they would probably like to.

The Scottish Premiership outfit rounded off their group stage with a 3-1 defeat to Ajax at Ibrox on Tuesday night.

It was the sixth defeat suffered in Europe by Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side this season, and meant they finished with a goal difference of minus 20 – the worst group stage return since the adoption of the format in the 1990s.

The previous holders of this unwanted record were Dinamo Zagreb, who finished with zero points and a minus 19 goal difference in 2011/12, in a group featuring Real Madrid, Lyon and Ajax.

Viktoria Plzeň came close to breaking the record this season too, but their two goals in a 4-2 defeat to Barcelona on Tuesday meant they finished with minus 19 goal difference.

Sorry Rangers, but this record is now yours and yours alone.
