Rangers make gigantic statement with titanic Rugby Park win

It goes without saying that tonight’s win at Rugby Park was massive, absolutely massive, and was probably the biggest statement since Philippe Clement took over at Rangers.

This is one that, after 45 minutes, everything pointed to a dropped 3 points and Celtic, rampant at home to Dundee, retaking the lead in the title race.

The starting XI hadn’t worked, we were 1-0 down, and it was a very, very poor first half performance.

This got ‘that lot’ excited, trust us.

But then James Tavernier came to the sensational rescue again, following two half-time subs, which initially made no impact on the match. Tav’s free kick sure did.

Once that was in the back of the net then Dujon Sterling replaced Ross McCausland, the match changed completely as Tom Lawrence brilliantly found the back of the net, along with a stunner of a wave from Butland (he’s getting closer to that McGregor-esque miracle save) which kept it at 1-0.

It wasn’t plain sailing, it was, overall, an ugly match, but this was 100% the banana skin, the one we dreaded.

If we were going to drop points in the ‘big three’ of matches we face currently, it was going to be here, at Rugby Park.

With torrential rain and a pitch which should be outlawed soon, this had the makings of a disaster, and a bad XI which just didn’t work along with poorly-thought out tactics made it even more likely.

But those changes, along with Tav’s inspirational equaliser, fixed this one, and broke the hearts of the east of Glasgow.

They were counting on this one, and for long spells they were getting their wish, only for Tav to find the net, before Lawrence did the same, and that was it.

This was a gigantic statement – 11 wins on the bounce, remaining on top of the table, and the biggest test of the season so far in many ways – coming back at horrific Rugby Park from a goal down to win the match.

It was tough, it was ugly, but it was a massive win.

And we’re absolutely delighted.
