Rangers lose another £7M as Ben Davies agrees exit

Rangers are to lose Ben Davies for nothing after it was confirmed unofficially that Oxford United will take him on loan for one season. This will run his contract down to next summer and expiring the deal on the £4 million signing from Liverpool. The transfer was a farce from the start, with Davies signed as a supposed replacement for Calvin Bassey. He lived up to expectations in the worst way and delivered nothing close to value.

The most damaging part is not only the £4 million fee that Rangers will never recover but also the fact Davis has pocketed £30,000 a week for the entire length of his stay at Ibrox. That level of financial mismanagement underlines how far standards have fallen. Reports recently suggested Birmingham City had agreed a permanent deal worth £700,000, but those claims were false. The truth is Oxford United will not spend a penny and will only take him on loan.

Rangers wanted him off the wage bill and hoped to claw something back, but the reality is brutal. No fee, no return, just wages saved for a year while Davies drifts away. It is a staggering admission of failure from the club’s recruitment and another reminder of the wasteful strategy that has plagued Rangers since the summer of 2022.

Davis has been the embodiment of that waste. He was a panic signing, a stopgap who never performed, and his exit reflects the muddled approach that has hurt the squad badly. Rangers will now move on without him, but the damage has already been done.

£3M on wages, £4M on fee, that’s £7M wasted on a player who was miles short of the quality needed. Rangers are to lose Ben Davies for nothing. Rangers’ management at its finest.
