Former Rangers, Everton and Scotland manager Walter Smith has died at the age of 73, the club have announced.

It was at Ibrox where he enjoyed his greatest success in the dugout, after a 14-year playing career, and won 21 trophies across two spells.

He was at the helm in the 1990s for seven of the Gers’ nine-in-a-row run and also had a spell at Everton as well as in charge of the Scotland team before returning to Govan in 2007.

Smith had been battling illness recently and underwent an operation in March this year due to health issues.

In addition to his large trophy haul at Ibrox, he also led the side to a UEFA Cup final appearance in 2008.
