Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has been handed a huge opportunity to bag back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles after managing to fend off interest in key trio Glen Kamara, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Rangers ended arch-rivals Celtic's dreams of clinching a 10th consecutive league title by picking up their 55th Scottish top flight crown last season.

But finishing top of the standings resulted in clubs courting their star men and Kamara confirmed numerous suitors registered an interest in acquiring his services during the summer.

West Ham United were among the clubs to make an enquiry, while newly-promoted Premier League outfit Watford were also keen on the defensive midfielder.

Reports suggest Arsenal even went as far as to offer the Finland international a five-year contract as they looked to broker a deal.

After keeping the 25-year-old at Ibrox, Rangers have opened talks over a new contract as Kamara's current deal expires in less than two years.

Antena 1, via Glasgow Live, claim striker Morelos agreed terms on a move to Portuguese giants Porto only to see the Gers hold firm and refuse to sanction a transfer, while long-term admirers Leeds United were linked with Kent after seeing a £10million bid turned down last year.

What has Dean Jones said about the trio?

Transfer guru Jones was certain Rangers would be unable to hold onto Kamara, Morelos and Kent during the summer transfer window.

But he feels the Glasgow-based side need to use the lack of departures to their advantage and clinch a second consecutive Scottish Premiership crown.

He told GMS: "Kamara, Morelos and Kent looked almost nailed on to go, as much from a financial point of view as anything else. It looked like they needed to bring in money.

"They haven't done it and they have to see it as a massive opportunity to build on last season.

"Obviously, they made the most of what happened at Celtic last season and having that consistency, by keeping those players, should be a massive boost."
