Rangers defender Leon Balogun remains a significant doubt for today’s Old Firm clash against Celtic at Ibrox, as he continues to recover from a cheekbone fracture sustained during the Europa League quarter-final defeat to Athletic Bilbao last month.

The 36-year-old Nigerian international underwent minor surgery and has since returned to training, wearing a protective mask. Interim manager Barry Ferguson confirmed Balogun’s participation in training sessions but emphasized caution regarding his inclusion in the matchday squad.

“Leon trained today with a mask on, so he looked fine. We will need to see how he reacts tomorrow, but it was good to see him back,”

Ferguson stated during a pre-match press conference.

Balogun’s potential absence adds to Rangers’ defensive concerns, with Dujon Sterling and Ridvan Yilmaz already ruled out for the season. Tom Lawrence also faces a race against time to be fit for the fixture.

Despite Celtic having already secured the Scottish Premiership title, the Old Firm derby remains a fiercely contested encounter. Rangers aim to secure a third consecutive league victory over their rivals, following wins in the previous two meetings.

Balogun’s contract with Rangers is set to expire in June, and his recent injury has cast uncertainty over his future at the club. While the defender has expressed a desire to extend his stay, the club’s impending changes, including a potential takeover and a focus on younger talent, may influence contract decisions.

As the match approaches, Ferguson and his coaching staff will assess Balogun’s readiness, balancing the need for experienced defenders against the risk of aggravating his injury. The final decision on his participation will be made closer to kick-off.

The Old Firm derby is scheduled to kick off at 12:00 BST at Ibrox Stadium.
