Rangers returned to winning ways on Sunday as Alfredo Morelos returned to put in a sensational performance in the Premiership for Gio van Bronckhorst.

The Colombia international came back from time away with his country and ended the 5-0 drubbing of Hearts with two goals and an assist to his name.

Morelos has now plundered 109 goals and provided 48 assists in 213 matches for the Light Blues since joining the club in 2017.

Gers chief Ross Wilson has brought in forwards to compete with him over the years and not all of them have gone exactly to plan.

Howler

Rangers snapped up Switzerland international Cedric Itten from FC St Gallen in 2020, with Transfermarkt valuing him at £3.6m at the time.

He endured a difficult first year in Scotland as he scored four goals in 30 Premiership outings, along with two goals in ten cup games – finding the back of the net once every 6.6 matches. The striker was unable to find a rich vein of form, but Transfermarkt opted to increase his value to £4.05m in January of that season.

Steven Gerrard then decided that he was surplus to requirements last summer and sanctioned a loan move to Bundesliga side Greuther Furth. The forward went and scored just twice in 12 appearances for the German team as his woes in front of goal continued.

Transfermarkt then changed his valuation again in December 2021, bringing him down to £2.70m – meaning his value has now plummeted rather drastic 33.3% in the space of a year.

On that evidence, Wilson made an error in bringing Itten to the club initially as he was not good enough to make a big impact in Gerrard’s squad and he compounded that mistake by selecting the wrong club to send him on loan to. Instead of shipping him out to a team where he could find his goalscoring touch and regain his value, he was sent to a Bundesliga struggler where the Swiss attacker found life difficult again.

How well do you know Morelos? First... who did he score his 100th goal against?

St Mirren Aberdeen Hearts Hibernian

Van Bronckhorst recalled him last month and his performances since coming back have once again shown that Wilson endured a howler by signing him for the Gers. He started matches against Livingston and Ross County and failed to impress as he lost ten of his 13 duels and ended both games without a goal or assist.

This suggests that he has not improved after his loan stint away from Ibrox and remains a poor piece of business by the club.

£3m and a yearly salary of £728,000.
