Rangers: Gerrard is making the right call with Bongani Zungu | OneFootball

It has been confirmed that Rangers won’t be signing Amiens loanee Bongani Zungu on a permanent deal this summer, which is the right decision by Steven Gerrard after a less than impressive loan spell at Ibrox from the 28-year-old.

As per Glasgow Live, Amiens manager Oswald Tanchot has confirmed that the South Africa international will be back with the club in Ligue 2 next season. Rangers signed the midfielder on loan during the summer following his parent club’s relegation last term and negotiated an option to buy at the end of his loan spell at Ibrox.

However, he has managed just four starts in all competitions this season, with the majority of his appearances coming from the bench, as he struggled to oust the likes of Steven Davis, Glen Kamara, Ryan Jack, Scott Arfield and Joe Aribo in Gerrard’s midfield.

Rangers have reportedly been paying Zungu £12,500k per week during his time at Ibrox and he has spent 30 weeks at the club, totalling £375,000 in wages.

This means that they have paid him a remarkable £94,000 per start this season, suggesting that he has unfortunately been a huge waste of money for the Light Blues, and it is no surprise that he won’t be joining permanently.

Although there are numerous players in the current Rangers squad who will go down in history for their roles in the historic 55th title win, it is hard to say the same about Zungu, who will likely be quickly forgotten by most of the Ibrox faithful due to his lack of appearances in this behind-closed-doors season.

He also let the club down by breaking lockdown restrictions to attend a party, earning himself a suspension in the process, which was surely a key factor in costing him a permanent deal at Ibrox.

Given that Zungu has averaged a lowly 6.25 WhoScored rating across for his performances in the Premiership and the Europa League this season, Gerrard is definitely making the right decision to not sign him permanently.
