Rangers finally make a proper quality summer signing

Rangers today confirmed the loan signing of Czechia’s right wing star Václav Černý in what presents the second proper Rangers-level addition this summer following ex-Aberdeen star Connor Barron joining up in Govan.

The 26-year-old is finally the kind of marquee calibre player Rangers absolutely desperately needed, and with a market value of £8M and an outstanding CV from the Eredivisie with ex-side FC Twente, he’s a fantastic winger who threatens to really make his mark on football.

He did of course have an underwhelming season in Germany after Wolfsburg paid the circa £7M for him from the Dutch outfit, but he simply wasn’t favoured there. 6 goals and an assist in 25 isn’t great, but he only had 14 or so starts and wasn’t regarded as fitting their picture. After a slow start there he was pretty much abandoned.

But his record in Holland paints a completely different picture. 28 goals and assists in 41 is breathtaking in 22/23, and is why Wolfsburg spent the big money, even if his 21/22 was badly disrupted by injury. 20/21? 13 goals and assists in 17. Still a great return.

Overall for Twente, 43 in 78 – Rangers level stuff.

Now there’s a caveat, a big one. He just didn’t do it in Germany.

We always preach on Ibrox Noise that either the players of Rangers’ level have come from a pressure club where winning is critical, or that they’ve shone in a top five league. Both are useful.

Cerny hasn’t done either of these, sadly – he’s done the same as Sam Lammers – shone wonderfully in Holland (which is just a bit below a top 5 league) with midlevel sides but struggled at high-pressure clubs or top five leagues.

So we hope Cerny shines for Rangers as he did for Twente.

That’s the Cerny we hope for, but we do just urge that little caution that he could be another Sam Lammers.

We really, really, hope not.

We think he’s a mega talent and we look forward to him in the blue of Rangers.
