In Glasgow, he rose through the youth ranks at both Rangers FC and with the Northern Irish national football team.
McCausland scored two goals in nine total matches for Northern Ireland’s U16 and U17 sides, and three goals in five UEFA Youth League appearances for the Light Blues.
On 14th May 2022, McCausland made his senior debut for the Gers, replacing Amad Diallo in the 61st minute against Heart of Midlothian—and marked the occasion with an assist for fellow debutant Cole McKinnon.
He continued to represent the Rangers FC B team in the 2022-23 season, and contributed with 10 goals and four assists in 38 appearances.
In total, McCausland scored 14 goals and provided five assists across 50 total appearances for the Gers’ reserve and youth teams.
McCausland signed a new long-term contract at Rangers in November 2023, keeping him at Ibrox until at least 2027. Speaking at the time, he said:
“I’m really pleased to have agreed this new deal with the club.
“It’s no secret I am a massive Rangers supporter, and there was no doubt in my mind I wanted to commit my future here for the long-term.
“I’m extremely grateful to the new manager for giving me an opportunity in recent weeks, and I want to repay him and everyone at the club with my performances on the pitch in the years to come.”
Manager Philippe Clement welcomed the news:
“I am really pleased with the progress Ross has made in recent weeks, and he is deserving of this new contract.
“I have been clear that young players will be given an opportunity at this club if they show the right qualities and work ethic, and Ross has done that.
“Ross is a talented young player, and I think it is an important step from the club to move to secure his future here.”
The 2023-24 season proved to be the breakthrough campaign for McCausland. He scored five goals and provided six assists in 42 total appearances across all competitions, firmly establishing himself as an essential part of the first team squad with the Light Blues.
So far in the current campaign, he has made 13 appearances—contributing two goals and one assist—as he competes for starts on the wing with the likes of Václav Černy, Nedim Bajrami, and Rabbi Matondo.
McCausland has represented Northern Ireland at various age groups—U16, U17, U19, and U21—scoring two goals in 16 appearances.
He made his senior debut in November 2023 against Finland, starting the Euro 2024 qualifier in which Northern Ireland lost 4-0 away from home. Since then, he has made four substitute appearances without any goals or assists.
