Rangers fans have today reacted in surprise at the inclusion of John Lundstram in the Team of the Year as voted for by SPFL players.

The midfielder was included in a select XI along with clubmates Jack Butland and James Tavernier, but it was the ex-Sheffield player’s presence in the XI which appeared to bring the most surprise.

Lundstram’s form has admittedly dipped pretty aggressively the past 6 weeks, coinciding strongly with Rangers’ own form collapse, and that does seem to be strongly counting against him in the eyes of some fans who can’t believe he’s in that selection.

Of course they are being immensely revisionist – from October through till mid-March he was one of Rangers’ best players, and the same supporters were screaming at the club to pay him what he wanted in terms of a new contract.

With his loss of form, fickle opinion has indeed dramatically changed and many of those supporters couldn’t get rid of the midfield talisman fast enough, and that’s a little unfair given Lunny is having to deal with two things:

One, the bottom falling out of Rangers’ form the past month and a half, with manager Philippe Clement losing his way completely as results crashed.

Two, his own contract situation, where he is now uncertain where he’ll be next season because Rangers won’t give him the circa £33,000 a week we wants.

So it’s really no surprise his displays have seen a downturn.

That said, it’s been noted by many, not just Ibrox Noise, that Lundstram has never in three years ever owned an Old Firm, in fact, he’s not even come close to doing so.

Such a lack of power in such a big match for a player who seems built to thrive in that fixture is a major disappointment.

On that level, Rangers can absolutely do better.

But it’s his place in the SPFL team of the year that has ‘disappointed’ so many Rangers fans.

Still seems a speck revisionist to us.
