Rangers fans react with fury at Hamza Igamane and his exit

Rangers fans are reacting with fury over the exit of Moroccan striker Hamza Igamane. Hamza Igamane leaves Rangers under a cloud. Signed from FAR Rabat last year, the forward has been a patchy acquisition, showing flashes of potential without ever nailing down a first-team place. While composed in front of goal, his lack of physique, pace, height and teamwork left his overall game distinctly short of the standard required at Ibrox.

Profit

On the face of it, losing him is not the biggest blow. The real story lies in the financials and the fallout. Rangers have sold him for £11 million after paying only £1.5 million. That profit is an outstanding return, and he becomes the second Philippe Clement signing in recent weeks to leave at a heavy gain, following Brazilian left back Jefte. For once, the club can point to good business.

But the St Mirren episode cannot be ignored. Igamane refused to play for Russell Martin, lying about an injury to avoid coming on. Fans might not tolerate Martin either, yet that does not excuse the striker. You play for the team that pays you, and he flat-out refused. His general attitude since January has been dire, and while he never held animosity towards Rangers, the fans or his teammates, his disdain for Scottish football and Russell Martin was clear. We can agree with both of those, but it remains no excuse for his conduct.

Lille

When Lille came in with a £15 million bid earlier in the year, Rangers’ rejection looked a major risk. Ibrox Noise feared another Alfredo Morelos situation, with a player desperate to leave, losing value, then walking for nothing. The comparison is valid. In the end, Rangers have accepted £11 million, meaning a £4 million hit on the rejected offer. Bad business sense again. Still, the player himself made his position clear. He openly admitted he was “very excited about the possibility of joining Lille” months ago. His heart was gone long before this sale.

So Hamza Igamane leaves Rangers under a cloud. The fallout in Paisley showed his lack of respect, and the sale closes another sorry chapter in Rangers’ toxic present. Fans have made their feelings clear in a recent Ibrox Noise poll, with very few siding with him. They just wanted him gone, and now he is.

Que sera.
