Rangers fans are eager for Tillman to be permanent

We were very interested in the response to our Malik Tillman piece where we were encouraging, with caution, about the possibility of signing the lad permanently.

For avoidance of doubt, while Tillman’s market value is around £2M at present, we don’t know what the option to buy is worth, and neither does anyone else bar those privy to his contract.

But what intrigued us is the mindset of fans eager to get the boy signed up permanently.

This was interesting because fans are so eager to dismiss a bad start by some players who don’t immediately settle (Davies, Matondo and Yilmaz haven’t all come flying out the traps) but take very seriously a good start by others (Tillman and Lawrence).

What we are saying is this:

Why do some fans reject a start which is not spectacular (Yilmaz for example) and ignore it, and suggest we give the player a chance, but take at face value a fine start and immediately portray that player as Lionel Messi who we must sign?

What we mean is, why is a bad start rejected and expected to be turned around (give him a chance) but a great start is expected to be maintained and we need to keep this player and they’re a success.

Surely form dips and troughs in the course of a season, and we should no more rush to sign a player permanently than we should reject a slow start from him?

Fans are very quick to judge when it suits them to do so, and very quick to reject judgement when it suits them as well.

And hell, your friends at Ibrox Noise are of course fans too and by no means absolving ourselves of guilt in this respect either.

Football really is a funny old game is it not?
