Rangers: European reports claim Gio readying bid for Tav | OneFootball

Rangers’ transfer window is over for anyone not a free agent, with 11 signings this summer confirmed including Mohamed Diomande and the new deal for Oscar Cortes, but that hasn’t stopped continuing speculation over any free agent arrivals (more on that later) and potential departures.

And the big departure being hyped up of course is that of captain James Tavernier, with Turkish reports alleging that former Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst and new charges Besiktas are interested in a deal for the right back.

Although GVB is currently using ex-Norway international Jonas Svensson, 31, at RB, it’s claimed by various media reports from that part of the world that the ex-Ibrox chief wishes to add Tavernier to his roster, following from their time together at Rangers.

Of course it’s entirely possible Gio wants to use Tav in a different position, or he wants to create serious competition in that slot – we couldn’t possibly speculate.

We do know Gio is an admirer of Tav, and perhaps sees a use for him in the Super Lig.

It should be noted that van Bronckhorst’s start in Turkey has been absolutely imperious – he’s got a 100% win record aside a 3-3 draw in Europa League qualifying away from home, meaning the Istanbul giants sit at the top end of the table, a point behind Fenerbahce who have played a match more.

Gio has made the storming start with Besiktas, having already won silverware there with a 5-0 thrashing of Galatasaray in the Super Cup final.

So Besiktas are in a good place overall, and Tavernier might see it as a much better bet than hanging around any more at Rangers.

But we’ll see if a bid does come in, with the Turkish window closing this Friday.
