According to a report from Sky Sports, Rangers have now entered the race for defender Scott McKenna. The Nottingham Forest defender is surplus to requirements at the Premier League club. Celtic are already interested in the player.

McKenna is available on loan and can be signed for free in the summer by either Scottish club as the defender’s contract expires on June 30, 2024.

The player is available at what seems a bargain as he is not wanted by Nuno Espirito Santo. Ever since the appointment of Santo, McKenna has not even made the bench of Nottingham Forest.

So if the player wants to have playing time before this summer, he has to make a move. Now it seems that both Rangers and Celtic are interested given he is a proven defender who can be bought in at a small outlay.

Also apparently, McKenna was banished from first team training last month, so it does seem the most obvious thing that he will move.

Rangers do have the numbers in the centre half position. But McKenna is a left footed centre half and could be a valuable addition to the squad. For Celtic, given their issues, the need for McKenna is more obvious.

With Rangers mostly being linked with forwards (and Fabio Silva already signed), it is easy to forget that Clement will need reinforcements in defensive and midfield areas too. While the lack of scoring is something that has been noticeable for Rangers, the defence still has a lot of issues. If not for Butland bailing the defence out on several occasions this season, we would be having different conversations about the need for immediate reinforcements in the defensive area.

But it should be remembered that McKenna has not played a great deal of matches in the last one year or so. In April, 2023, McKenna suffered a fractured collarbone and that ruled him out for the rest of that season. This season he has had limited opportunities with only 5 Premier League appearances with the last of them coming in September 2023.
