In a recent interview with BT Sport (as claimed by The Scottish Sun), Rangers defender Connor Goldson has affirmed his desire to extend his stay in Glasgow despite the ongoing contract conundrum. The centre-half has entered the final year of his Ibrox deal and an agreement is yet to be reached between the two parties.

“Yeah, it is. I’ve said this a lot of times before. But at the same time, I want to see the club go to the next level. As I’ve said before, I want the club to win 56, 57 and 58. I don’t want to be remembered just for 55. It is a place I want to stay but it needs to be right for me and my family.”

Goldson has made his intentions clear when asked about his future.

Steven Gerrard, however, is not confident anymore over a potential extension beyond next summer. He desperately wants the 28-year-old to stay for years but, at the same time, has admitted his lack of knowledge on the player’s intention or the club’s bank balances and numbers.

The Gers roped him in from Brighton & Hove Albion back in the summer of 2018. He has been astounding ever since and hardly missed a game in the heart of the defensive line. Goldson has made 178 appearances to date donning the Light Blues shirt and earned a cult status already thanks to his headstrong display week in week out.

What’s Next For Rangers And Goldson

Having said that, there’s been a bit of inconsistency of late compared to his last season’s heroics. It’s not always right to blame the players for an underwhelming show amid contract row, however, the likes of Leon Balogun and Filip Helander have been more composed and resilient so far this term. The Englishman looked vulnerable at times against long balls, also his lethargic defending along with wrong positioning cost them in a few close contests against the run of play.

Apart from Balogun, Helander and Goldson, the Gers tied down Jack Simpson earlier this year. But the former Bournemouth prodigy has failed to live up to expectations, whereas Nikola Katic has been loaned out to Hajduk Split to grab regular minutes following a year-long injury nightmare. Calvin Bassey, predominantly a left fullback, is being deployed as the fourth-choice centre-back among the current options.

Although the Gers must attempt to convince the ex-Brighton star, bolstering the backline might become the priority if they eventually fail to retain Goldson in the long run. In spite of the instability, he remains integral to Gerrard’s Rangers revolution.
