Rangers could use Henderby, but Dio must up his game

We spoke about Gareth Henderby yesterday as the man behind Ghana’s Right to Dream Academy, and how much of a ‘scam’ it borderline was, producing maybe ordinary to decent players, feeding them into Nordsjælland’s squad system who then sell them at colossal profit.

Well from what we’ve seen of Rangers’ January signing Mohamed Diomande, he is very much an exact example of this in action.

He has been distinctly ordinary – we demonstrated a week or two ago that his stats, ability wise, are well below upper SPL standard, behind completely average SPL players in equivalent positions, and that £4.5M was definitely one hell of a killing the Danes were making.

And that’s the bottom line isn’t it?

January was abysmal, and always is abysmal at Rangers, bar, inexplicably, Michael Beale’s season where for four months Todd Cantwell and Nico Raskin did shine.

But typically that month brings rubbish to Ibrox, and we can’t say Silva or Dio have in any way impressed, apart from to the hipster Rangers fans who like to oversell even the most mediocre players, which is a byproduct of 2012 where fans managed rate even the most modest players like Fraser Aird and Andy Little.

Cortes was a lot more impressive this year, but his manager kind of broke him and we lost his services.

But the point?

Dio didn’t sparkle, and Rangers are down £4.5M, and through stubbornness the manager will keep selecting him because he’s his player.

Not a single player from Henderby’s Academy has really shone at a higher level than Denmark, and given how utterly dreadful Ghana’s national team is these days (they didn’t even get to the KO stage of the AFCON) that’s not really that surprising.

It’s really not a market to plunder at all, if Dio is an example of the quality we’d be getting, but Henderby is a genius for managing to get this level of revenue from such ordinary players.

We could do with someone as smart as him, but we do need better than Dio.
