There is often a point in the transfer window where a name from the not-so-distant past resurfaces and sparks debate among Rangers fans. With various positions still to be addressed and depth still needed in key areas, it is no surprise to see links cropping up that focus on areas which lacked edge last season. One such position is midfield and one such name is John Lundstram.

The former Rangers midfielder has reportedly been made available this summer by Trabzonspor, with claims from Turkey suggesting the Turkish side are ready to move him on. That in turn has led to questions over whether Rangers could look at bringing the 30-year-old back to Ibrox. He only left in the summer of 2024 and while his exit was met with mixed feelings at the time, his experience and physical presence were never in doubt.

In truth, Rangers do still look short of proper bite in the middle of the park. The likes of Raskin and Diomande are more technical operators while players like Ryan Jack have now departed and left a vacuum in terms of grit and leadership. A return for Lundstram might not excite everyone but it would certainly tick some boxes in terms of combativeness and familiarity with the demands of Scottish football. His European pedigree with Rangers remains a point in his favour, even if his last season at Ibrox was a little underwhelming.

Interestingly, recent developments suggest Trabzonspor are not just open to a sale but actually pushing for it, meaning Rangers could potentially secure a cut-price or even free return depending on how things progress. Whether there is a genuine interest from the club remains to be seen but the links are beginning to take shape and often that is the first step.

Rangers still have business to do in this transfer window and midfield remains a concern. If a proven option who knows the club and the league becomes available, it would make sense for the club to at least explore it. Lundstram may not be a marquee name now but he still offers something valuable.
