Rangers confirmed as in discussions over Liam Kelly

Today’s big story is the slightly bizarre ditty involving Liam Kelly, who Ibrox Noise openly criticised only a few weeks ago.

The s*n broke this story and Sky Sports have confirmed it is true, that Rangers are in talks with Motherwell’s goalkeeper about a return to Ibrox, but that the s*n’s claims an agreement has been secured is some distance off.

It’s a very strange story altogether – Kelly is not a bad goalie, but his career since Rangers has been as mediocre as it gets, and we only know one angle, the home grown quota.

Alternatively:

Surely Kelly is not being signed as a possible summer replacement for Jack Butland?

Surely he’s not being signed as a deputy, given that’s exactly what he left Rangers as?

Rangers already have Robby McCrorie, who, in fairness, hasn’t come close to securing the shirt, with Butland in imperious form, but he must be losing some patience about ever getting his chance at Ibrox.

It’s a very surreal story.

We illustrated some weeks ago that Kelly moved to QPR, did average, then went back north to Motherwell and has done ok, but not amazingly well enough that he’s viewed as a new number one?

The only angle aside the homegrown quota that makes sense is that Rangers really don’t know about Butland’s future, and would like to have Kelly and McCrorie fight for the shirt in the event of the England stopper leaving.

Two youngish Scottish stoppers bringing the best out of each other by vying for Rangers’ number one shirt?

It’s a stretch.

But all we know is Rangers are interested, and have spoken to him.

We also know Celtic were interested in him, in a very surreal story even more surreal than this one, so whether it’s Rangers trying to hijack that orr….

We admit it, we didn’t see this story coming.
