If a recent report from The Daily Record is believed to be true, Rangers are closing in on Sheffield Wednesday attacker Djeidi Gassama, who has agreed personal terms with the Glasgow giants ahead of the other suitors.

The 21-year-old French youth international spent his youth years with AS Carrières Grésillons, Poissy, Mantes, and Brest before joining the esteemed ranks of Paris St-Germain. There, he primarily featured for their reserves but was also handed his first-team debut late in the 2021-22 season. Having sent him out on loan to Belgian outfit Eupen for the 2022-23 campaign, the Ligue 1 giants eventually sanctioned his low-key €1m transfer to the English Championship a couple of summers ago.

Gassama has been a regular for them over the past two years and was rewarded with the club’s Wise Old Owl Player of the Year for an impressive 2024-25 season. Although he only scored 8 times in 47 appearances across competitions, his flair and finesse from both flanks offered a creative spark in and around the attacking third.

Meanwhile, the South Yorkshire side finished 12th, thus missing out on a play-off place finish by 10 points. They would have loved to keep hold of Gassama to pursue a promotion push. But the cash-strapped Wednesday have no option but to let him part ways amid fears of losing several senior players, having failed to pay them on time thrice over the last four months.

Smart Move From Rangers?

Several stars have hinted at contract termination; however, the young winger prefers a departure on good terms to ease the pressure on the club management. Rangers have identified a few other names, including Crystal Palace’s Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, to succeed Vaclav Cerny down the right-hand flank. But the Eagles’ £10m asking price has been a stumbling block, regardless of their financial upliftment upon the anticipated takeover led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises.

Why They Are Keen On Having Him At Ibrox

The Light Blues have already bolstered their midfield and defensive third by roping in Lyall Cameron, Joe Rothwell, Thelo Aasgaard, Emmanuel Fernandez and Max Aarons. Along with Cerny’s return to Wolfsburg in the aftermath of a productive season-long loan stint, they have further released Ianis Hagi and Tom Lawrence following their contract expiry. Such high-profile exits decimate the Gers’ attacking threat, and Russell Martin, the newly-appointed Ibrox boss, has made a smart move by snapping up Gassama as an economic alternative to Rak-Sakyi.

While the youngster has yet to fulfil his potential, the guidance of Martin should help him flourish, exhibiting his flexibility across the frontline. Rangers must now agree on a fee with the Owls before announcing his arrival.
