Rangers boss Philippe Clement is obsessed with one draw

Rangers Philippe Clement is still banging on about 5 years ago when Brugge got a draw against Real Madrid, more or less proclaiming it the result of his career, in the group stage of the Champions League in 2019.

The Belgian boss, rambling on about needing better players to compete at that level, once again nodded in the direction of his own career high at the Bernabeu when his side got an unexpected draw in Spain.

What he maybe omitted from the story was that Madrid absolutely horsed his side in the ‘return’ 1-3.

He said:

“We need extra bodies and extra quality. To be successful. I always believe that with your squad you can succeed, because otherwise, you cannot get results against Real Madrid with a team like Brugge. Everyone said that was impossible. But if you don’t believe it is possible, it will never happen.”

Mate, you didn’t even win. This is like Rangers boasting about drawing with Inter or Barca. Sure, the fans have mentioned the results occasionally the past, but we’ve never heard Rangers managers boasting about getting a draw. Well… until Clement we hadn’t.

Had it been a win, sure, he can go on about it all he likes, but it was a draw, and once again, just like he proclaimed Rangers’ 3-3 v Celtic a ‘moral victory’ (a statement which made us feel sick at the time) he is once again overselling a draw as some grand achievement.

We’re also pretty sure ‘everyone’ would have said a win over there was impossible, not a draw, and they were, it seems, correct.

As for Clement’s comments in themselves, we’ll have more coverage of the latest piffle the manager is coming out with.

He’s honestly talking as much rotten patter as Beale now.
