The January transfer window is well underway and Rangers have already got the ball rolling with a deal to sign James Sands.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has procured his first signing in charge of the Gers and he could add further additions to his squad before the end of the month, with speculation swirling around who they could be targeting.

McGregor replacement

The signing of Siegrist in the summer could see Van Bronckhorst replace Allan McGregor as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. The latter is out of contract at the end of the season and turns 40 later this month, suggesting that his playing career in Glasgow could be coming to an end.

By bringing in the Dundee United shot-stopper, the Dutchman could find an excellent replacement for the Scotland veteran and ensure that the team is not weakened next season.

Van Bronckhorst’s predecessor Steven Gerrard previously admitted that past performances were aiding the 39-year-old’s claim to be the number one at Ibrox, saying: “Allan McGregor has been absolutely fantastic for me. He’s got tons of credit in the bank.

“I’ve now got two number ones and I’d have no doubts about playing either of them in any game.

“Come the end of the season we’ll need to see how it pans out, but don’t be surprised if people are rested and we go for a different keeper for a different game.

“It wasn’t that I preferred Jon over Allan, it’s just that Allan has missed two weeks and Jon has been training well and keeping clean sheets.”

Who did Rangers beat in their first game of 2021?

Celtic Aberdeen St Mirren Ross County

Meanwhile, 6 foot 4 Siegrist has been in impressive form in the Premiership and could be a superb signing. Last year, Dundee United boss Micky Mellon was asked if he is the best goalkeeper in the league and responded: “Yeah, without a doubt! He is a fantastic goalkeeper and he works very, very hard at his craft.

“When called upon you have to be very good to beat him. He has done terrific for us when called upon.”

The 6 foot 3 colossus has saved 73.1% of the shots against him for the Tangerines in the Premiership this term, showing that he can stop a high percentage of efforts he faces. Therefore, he is a proven player at this level who could slot straight into Van Bronckhorst’s team and replace McGregor with ease at Ibrox.
