Rangers aren’t signing good players any more, but neither are Celtic

It’s a simple question really, why do Rangers simply sign rubbish players these days? Rangers are not signing Rangers level players. This trend was very noticeable as early as 2022, with now recently departed Ben Davies arriving from Liverpool for a ridiculous £4m and weekly wage of £30,000. A literally ordinary lower league EFL player, and Rangers paid big money for this guy.
That window unfortunately also saw the arrival of Rabbi Matondo and the unfortunate Ridvan Yilmaz, as well as a few others who simply didn’t work out. The only two arguable successes in that window were Antonio Colak and Malik Tillman, perhaps successes for different reasons, regardless of which angle we look at. But nevertheless, overall, since 2022, Rangers have generally signed nothing but rubbish, players who are simply not up to the task of playing for Rangers. There are of course a few exceptions to this rule, there are one or two players in there who are decent. Yes, decent, not great, but decent.
But perhaps the problem lies deeper than just Rangers signing rubbish. Could it simply be that good players don’t want to come to Scotland? Even Celtic are having trouble this window, acquiring players who are of quality. They’ve only signed one or two. And they may have more cash than Rangers, but they have not strengthened themselves at all.
Arguably the opposite, they’ve lost three of their key players. Rangers haven’t really lost any key players because we don’t really have any key players to begin with. But nevertheless, we’re certainly not building quality in the squad this summer. Yes, one or two fans will find one or two players particular standouts to them personally. We at Ibrox Noise do like potentially Oliver Antman, but it was only his debut that shone since that match. Nevertheless, despite having a potential market value of around £30m and an excellent CV for his time in Holland, the Finnish star hasn’t shone at Rangers at all.
There are one or two others that are appealing on paper, that are likeable. But in general, Rangers are not signing players who are game changers and who are proving that on the pitch. But neither are Celtic. And this then harks back to the same point. Are Rangers just not attractive to players of quality anymore? We are spending enough, but we’re spending it on rubbish. Rangers are not signing Rangers level players.
We’re spending £5m on a nobody like Thelo Aasgaard, who nobody would have heard of from a Rangers persuasion. And yes, he might have got good stats in League One, but that’s League One Luton. This is not Rangers level. He hasn’t really stood out as a Rangers player either, and he’s only just regained fitness in itself. £4M on Fernandez, need we expand further?
Nevertheless, Rangers are spending big money, but not getting big players for that money. As we said before, this £25m expenditure this summer, give or take, has been the biggest that we’ve splurged out in any signings in one summer since the days of Advocaat. It’s been that strong financially anyway. Obviously, that’s due to investment from the new owners. But nevertheless, what we’ve got for that money has been absolute rubbish. There just isn’t a team in here. And plus, of course, you’ve got our loans to deal with as well.
So at the end of the day, are Rangers just not able to attract players of that quality? Of the quality that we need? Maybe that is the problem. Maybe our hands are tied. And perhaps Celtic’s are too. We are all, after all, stuck in Scotland.
