Rangers and Djed Spence: What do we know so far? Is it likely to happen? | OneFootball

Glasgow Rangers are one of a number of clubs who are considering a move for Middlesbrough full back Djed Spence this summer, with ESPN reporting that the Scottish champions are very keen to bring in the youngster to Ibrox.

The defender has been brilliantly consistent for Neil Warnock’s side this season and has played his part in 40 games across all competitions for Boro as they finished in 10th place after looking like play-off contenders during some stages of the campaign.

Spence is one of many young players at the Riverside Stadium who has been linked with a departure in more recent times and could well have a big decision to make this summer if the likes of Rangers do come calling for his services.

What do we know so far?

We know that Rangers aren’t the only club who are said to hold an interest in signing the former Fulham man this summer, with ESPN also reporting that the likes of Wolves, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur have also been monitoring the 20-year-old.

The same report also goes on to state that the Midlands are club are leading the race for the defender’s signature at present, with the club having apparently stepped up their interest as they look to offer Spence first team football at Molineux.

Spurs and Everton are seemingly further behind in the race for the full back however, with the North London side having not revisited the subject since Jose Mourinho left the club and the Toffees holding a bigger interest in signing Max Aarons from Norwich City.

Is it likely to happen?

Given that James Tavernier is the firm first choice at right back under Steven Gerrard at Rangers, it would appear unlikely that Spence would swap first team football at Middlesbrough for a place on the bench at Ibrox.

He needs to be playing regularly and for that reason he may well favour staying at Boro for another season at least as opposed to moving elsewhere during the summer.

However the pull of Premier League football could prove too strong at Wolves and he could well be tempted to depart if the two clubs can agree a fee that is representative of his obvious talents.
