Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be provided with a ‘huge boost’ if Ryan Kent commits his long-term future to the club by penning a new contract at Ibrox, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Kent made his loan move from Liverpool permanent for £7.5million close to three years ago, but there are question marks over whether he will still be on the Gers’ books beyond the September 1 transfer deadline.

What’s the latest news involving Kent?

Kent has entered the final 12 months of his £18,000-per-week contract, leaving Rangers in a precarious situation.

It means the Gers are facing up to the prospect of losing the winger, who registered six goal contributions during their run to the Europa League final last season, for nothing at the end of the campaign.

But former Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson has tipped Kent to put pen-to-paper before the transfer window slams shut after opening talks.

Leeds United have been long-term admirers of the 25-year-old, while it is understood that Everton, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Fulham have held an interest.

Kent reportedly has a £20million release clause written into his current Ibrox contract and he would become the second most expensive outgoing if a club matches that fee.

What has Pete O’Rourke said about Kent?

O’Rourke believes that Kent is one of Rangers’ star men and, as a result, the Glasgow giants are desperate to retain his services.

The journalist feels agreeing fresh terms with the winger would be advantageous for van Bronckhorst.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “I think Ryan Kent has shown that he is one of Rangers’ top performers.

“I think there’s been lots of speculation around his future and maybe moving away, so if they can get him on a new contract, that would be a huge boost for van Bronckhorst this season.”

Would a new Kent contract be positive for Rangers?

Kent has scored 30 goals and registered a further 49 assists in 176 Rangers appearances, emphasising that he is a key man.

Although the wide-man has been left out of the Gers’ matchday squad for each of their last two Scottish Premiership fixtures, that was only because van Bronckhorst cannot afford to be without Kent in the Champions League.

The Dutchman confirmed that he left Kent out of Saturday’s encounter with St Johnstone to ensure he was fit and ready to take on PSV Eindhoven in Tuesday’s Champions League play-off, so it is clear that Rangers want to ensure he remains at Ibrox for the long-term.
