Rangers’ managerial candidate Philippe Clement reportedly demands a salary of £2.5M a year over 4 years, making it a total of £10M for the duration, in a wage completely in line with what Rangers have been paying managers since Steven Gerrard.
While some fans are outraged at this number believing a manager isn’t worth that kind of money, that is completely in line with the same salary level Steven Gerrard, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and indeed The Mick received.
It breaks down to about £50,000 a week, £200,000 a month, which is completely in line with the normal salary most managers tend to get.
Players don’t get as high a wage at Rangers, with Connor Goldson, Danilo and Jack Butland said to be the highest-paid all at around £40,000 a week, and the idea of a top manager receiving a wage a bit higher than this is indeed par for the course.
Rangers have definitely overpaid past managers, Michael Beale especially loving the salary he was on, and naturally that was nowhere near value for money. Indeed that whole shambles cost the club around £20M minimum – his own salary plus the £15M+ he wasted on the rotten players he signed.
But Clement, clearly, would be a much more astute investment, and not one costing the earth.
It harks back to the CEO salary days – the standard level for an Old Firm CEO was around £750,000 a year going back a decade with the infamous Charles Green era, although we’ve not checked the numbers today. The point? That Chuck wasn’t stealing three quarters of a million from Rangers, that’s the standard wage in that job. James Bisgrove is getting that or more today.
So let’s not act like £2.5M would be a ‘disgrace’ of a wage for a manager – if Clement is the right man for the job, it’ll be a bargain.
The negotiations reportedly continue.
