Chivas knocked Pumas out of the Clausura play-offs reckoning with a convincing victory in the Repechaje on Sunday.
Scorers: Calderón 12′, Beltrán 51′, Macías 87′ Vega 89′; Diogo 19′
The Estadio Akron erupted when Cristian ‘Chicote’ Calderón opened the scoring in the 12th minute.
Pumas were guilty of indecisiveness and that allowed Calderon to run on to Jesús Orozco’s hopeful ball and steal in between defender Santiago Trigos and goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera to toepoke home.
But that lead would last just seven minutes, with Pumas equalising with a similar goal. Arturo Ortíz clipped a ball in behind the Chivas rearguard, and striker Diogo outmuscled Orozco before firing past Miguel Jiménez.
Roared on a fervent home crowd, Chivas regained the lead early in the second half through Beltrán.
It was a magnificent effort by the diminutive midfielder, slicing through the Pumas defence courtesy of two wall passes and then slotting home left-footed.
The result was put beyond doubt three minutes from time when substitute José Juan Macías found himself unmarked to finish from close range, and Alexis Vega put the cherry on top just moments later.
It brought an end to a miserable week for Pumas, after they lost the Concacaf Champions League final to Seattle on Wednesday.
Chivas march on, however, with a two-legged Clásico Tapatío against Atlas their reward for reaching the Clausura quarter-finals.
