Alex Jankewitz had one of, if not the worst debut in Premier League history as he was sent off less than 90 seconds into Southampton’s 9-0 drubbing by Manchester United.
Even though manager Ralph Hasenhüttl called the 19-year-old’s sending off a ‘silly mistake’, he commended the youngster for bravely apologising to his team-mates.
“He apologised today in front of the team,” Hassenhuttl explained.
“None of us are free from mistakes, not the player, not the referee, not the manager. Nobody.
“The squad feeling is that we had made this experience once and what happened afterwards was a reaction that everyone wanted to show, that led us to eleventh position in the last season.
“I think, and this is what I said to my players today, we now have a different team, different characters.
“We have learnt from the past but things and games like this can happen from time to time, especially when you get punished in the way we have been in the last game.
“But it is up to us to show what team we are and the good thing is that after every hit back you see a new hope.”
Sadly for Jankewitz, he was subject to racist abuse online on social media. The player is currently working with police while the club is actively supporting him, having released a statement condemning the abuse.
