Ralf Rangnick has revealed the profile of player he believes Manchester United should be signing this summer.

United's torrid season finally came to an end on Sunday, with a 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace enough to seal sixth position thanks to West Ham's defeat against Brighton.

However, the Red Devils still finished with their lowest ever points tally and major changes are expected in the summer when Erik ten Hag - who was in attendance at Selhurst Park - takes over.

Speaking in his post-match press conference Rangnick admitted that United have lacked spirit and cohesion this season.

"There could be more togetherness on the pitch and this is important when we think about new players," he said.

"We need to make sure that they are not only team players but they have the quality to strengthen the squad. They also need to be players who invest into the team spirit."

He added: "The most important thing is we find player for whom [United] is the best next sporting step in their career.

"They shouldn't want to come because it's Manchester United, because maybe they get a good contract here. It should be for developing their career and taking their next best step.

"If that happens you have a completely different level of energy and motivation. This is what we did at Red Bull and I think we fared well with that.

"This is a different quality [of player] we need than we did at RB Leipzig but they won the cup yesterday even though they were one player down. They could only do it as a team. This is important that we build a team that really deserves the name 'team'.

"Even in hard times they stick together, they stay together, they fight back. This is the most important part."

Although Ten Hag was in attendance at Selhurst Park, Rangnick denied that he has had any contact with the playing squad so far. The Dutchman began work behind the scenes at United's London-based head office earlier this week.
