Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick has provided an injury update on three first-team stars ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash at Brentford.

The Red Devils were without Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford against Aston Villa due to a hip problem and dead leg respectively. The duo could return against the Bees.

Speaking in today’s press conference, Rangnick was optimistic that the pair would be available on Wednesday, having not been deemed fit enough to make the matchday squad against Villa.

He told Manutd.com: “Cristiano and Marcus were training yesterday, so I suppose they will also be training today, but at the press conference before the Villa game, I was also convinced that Cristiano would be available.”

“In the end, he wasn’t. It was the same with Marcus, so we have to wait for the training session today. Right now, I think both could be available.”

Meanwhile, there was a positive update on the fitness of Paul Pogba, who has not played a competitive game since early November after suffering a thigh injury in France training.

Rangnick recently said that the midfielder may need another five weeks to recover, but has now provided a big boost, confirming that he could return in a couple of weeks’ time.

He added: “What you could see from the very first day in training yesterday. He’s present, he’s physically present, he’s mentally present, what I saw in training yesterday was very promising.”

“I’m looking very much looking forward to having him available in two weeks time after the international break.”

United have lost momentum since their two-week gap due to a coronavirus outbreak. They have picked up just five points from the previous four league matches.

Despite this, they are only five points behind fourth-placed West Ham United with two games in hand, but Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are better placed than them.

The Red Devils are not yet in a must-win territory, but can’t afford to drop more points with West Ham United, Arsenal and Spurs all in a better run of form over the past month.

The return of Ronaldo will be a huge boost up front with his impressive tally of 14 goals from 22 games this term. Rashford will also be looking to make amends tomorrow.

The England international had a tough outing against Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month, where he was guilty of poor decision-making in the final third of the pitch.
