In a press conference on Wednesday, Ekstraklasa leaders Raków Częstochowa confirmed the identity of the man to replace outgoing coach Marek Papszun. His 32-year-old assistant Dawid Szwarga was announced as his successor.

Szwarga has himself been associated with Raków for the last two years, working his way to becoming Papszun’s right-hand man. Previously to this he had been an assistant at GKS Katowice.

A relative unknown outside of the coaching sphere due to a playing career which never lifted off, Szwarga has developed a strong reputation within the coaching community. Prior to joining Raków, he forged the path towards his future career by taking courses at FC Barcelona, FC Porto And Atletico Madrid. He Has also created his own project, “Deductor”, which deals which the training of Polish coaches in a more modern fashion, and led to cooperation with the PZPN.

The appointment of Szwarga highlights the intentions of owner Michał Świerczewski to continue the philosophy of the club into its new era. Szwarga himself also confirmed as such, stating in the press conference that he had “No intention” of changing the identity or style of play of the club.

Szwarga’s contract with Raków will be for an initial two years, with the option to extend for a further two years.

Although still to be officially confirmed, it’s likely that Szwarga’s first competitive game in charge of Raków Częstochowa will be their UEFA Champions League first qualifying round tie, in July.
