While FC Bayern Munich are said to be close to reaching an agreement with Ralf Rangnick in their search for a coach, ex-Schalker Ivan Rakitić reflects on what could have been. Unai Emery, who recently extended his contract at Aston Villa, could have been a valuable asset for the German record champions, according to the Croatian midfielder.

Unai Emery, who also coached Arsenal London in addition to Aston Villa, remains loyal to the Premier League. He has extended his contract at Aston Villa until 2027. This move has thwarted possible plans by FC Bayern Munich to appoint him as Thomas Tuchel’s successor. „Unai is one of the best coaches I’ve had in my career so far. Bayern would certainly have enjoyed him very much,“ said Ivan Rakitić in an interview with BILD. The Croatian star emphasised Emery’s ability to build a strong bond with the entire team and convince every single player of his fast, attack-oriented style of play.

Emery’s career has been characterised by success, including multiple Europa League titles with Sevilla and Villarreal as well as domestic success with Paris Saint-Germain. His attention to detail and commitment have earned him not only trophies, but also the respect of his players. „With his way of leading a team, he is one of the few who manage to build and maintain a close relationship with a complete squad of over 20 players,“ said Rakitic.

Emery „is a coach at the absolute top level“

Emery is currently making a name for himself at Aston Villa by leading the club to the top flight of the Premier League after a year and a half. Rakitić said: „This success doesn’t surprise me either, it’s no coincidence. Thanks to his international experience, Unai is now even better than when we were at Sevilla. He is a coach at the absolute top level!“

Although Emery is now staying in England, the 36-year-old has not ruled out working with Bayern in the future. „Emery has now extended his contract at Aston Villa, but in football you never know what will happen in the future…“, the former Schalke player adds.

While the Bayern management are now probably focussing on other candidates such as Austrian coach Ralf Rangnick, the question remains as to what Emery could have brought to the team. Sporting director Max Eberl and the team must now find other ways to achieve the club’s goals.
