The loanee missed the thumping win at Crystal Palace after picking up an injury during training. Mikel Arteta confirmed on Saturday: “He felt something in training and had to come off and we need to explore that with more tests.”

It is a big blow for club and player, who has struggled to assert himself in Arteta’s first-team plans since arriving on loan from Chelsea, playing just 93 minutes since October.

But now faces an extended period on the sidelines.

Updating reporters on Monday, Arteta said: "He’s gonna be out for weeks I believe. He needs further testing tomorrow to understand the extent of his injury.

“It’s his knee. We have to wait and see another 24 hours. Unfortunately, he’s gonna be out for a while."

It is a double blow Arsenal after Bukaya Saka was ruled out for “many weeks” with a hamstring injury.
