Rafael van der Vaart slams Manchester United star for inconsistent performances

Antony has been harshly criticised since his transfer to Manchester United. It almost feels like pundits and critics alike want to blame the Brazilian for his €95 million transfer fee.

Erik ten Hag would not have pursued Antony if he didn’t think the winger had what it takes to be a success at the top level, and he is the one responsible for getting that deal over the line with Ajax last summer.

On another note, I think Ten Hag bought really well in the summer, and there is no denying that United are a better team with Antony attacking from the right flank.

Since scoring on his United debut against Arsenal, we’ve seen flashes of brilliance delivered in equal measure by just as many quieter performances.

Former Netherlands international Rafael van der Vaart has acknowledged the Brazilian’s pedigree but believes the inconsistency attached to it must be addressed. He’s not wrong but we must remember that this is Antony’s first season in the Premier League and he is still a young player.

Speaking to Ziggo Sport, the former Tottenham Hotspur star said (via The Mirror): “Do you know what it is with Antony. He is, of course, a great talent and a great player, but he shouldn’t believe in himself very much.

“He’s just a good player who hasn’t proven anything yet.

“I do lie a show, but only when I can. Of course, you have to have that feeling.”

So, is Van der Vaart telling Antony not to believe in himself? What kind of advice is that?

Van der Vaart added: “He has played some good Champions League games, he’s come in reasonably well with the Brazil national team a few times, he’s made a big move, and hasn’t done much at Manchester United yet.”
