Real Madrid’s reported pursuit of Trent Alexander-Arnold has stirred up significant intrigue in the footballing world. With the Liverpool vice-captain entering the final months of his contract, speculation surrounding a potential move to the Spanish giants is gathering pace. Real Madrid have gained a reputation for capitalising on free transfers, with Kylian Mbappé being the most high-profile recent example. Now, they have their sights set on Alexander-Arnold, who could be available for nothing in the summer if a new contract at Liverpool isn’t agreed upon. Reports from The Telegraph indicate that Madrid have already made contact with Liverpool, even submitting a winter bid of approximately £25 million, which the Merseyside club swiftly rejected.
The Spanish giants are said to be prepared to offer Alexander-Arnold a lucrative deal, with wages potentially reaching £400,000 per week. “In the current market, Galactico signings at Real, according to sources, would expect to land between £8 million to £10 million net a season, which is around the £400,000-a-week range,” wrote Mike McGrath of The Telegraph.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Rafa Benitez, who managed both Liverpool and Real Madrid during his career, weighed in on the potential transfer. Benitez believes the attacking instincts of the England international would make him a natural fit for Los Blancos’ style of play.
“He is an offensive defender, and he has played as a midfielder for some time now,” Benitez explained. “Real Madrid are an attacking team. They are the best team in Spain. They will always be there even if Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are doing well.”
The Spaniard added, “For an offensive defender in an offensive team, you have more chances to make assists and then to create situations in attack that will be good for him as a player. He is doing that in Liverpool. So it’s not surprising. But with Real Madrid, you can guarantee that he will do that for years.”
Liverpool remain hopeful of convincing Alexander-Arnold to extend his stay at Anfield. The academy graduate has been a cornerstone of the team’s success in recent years, playing a key role in Premier League, Champions League, and domestic cup triumphs.
New manager Arne Slot is understood to view Alexander-Arnold as a pivotal figure in his long-term plans, while fans are understandably anxious about the possibility of losing one of their own. Despite Madrid’s interest and the financial allure that comes with it, Liverpool are reportedly preparing a contract extension offer that reflects Alexander-Arnold’s importance to the club.
From a Liverpool perspective, the thought of Trent Alexander-Arnold donning Real Madrid’s famous white jersey is unsettling. As a local lad who grew up in the shadow of Anfield, his departure would be more than just a sporting loss – it would be an emotional blow to the fanbase.
The positive, however, lies in the club’s proactive stance. The rejection of Madrid’s bid and the ongoing discussions around a new contract suggest Liverpool are doing everything possible to keep their vice-captain. Supporters hope that Alexander-Arnold’s loyalty and ambition to lead the club into a new era under Arne Slot will prevail.
Ultimately, while Real Madrid’s interest is legitimate and potentially lucrative for the player, Liverpool fans remain hopeful that Anfield will continue to be his footballing home for years to come.
