The goalkeeper position is like no other in football. Unlike in other positions, the No.2 will only get his chance in the event that the No.1 is injured or fails to convince over a prolonged period. The latter is true of AS Monaco’s Philipp Köhn (26), who after a string of poor performances, opened the door for Radoslaw Majecki (24). The Polish goalkeeper has certainly made the most of that opening.
Frustrated with his lack of game time, Majecki spent last season on loan at Monaco’s satellite club, Cercle Brugge. After an impressive campaign in Belgium, Majecki returned to the Principality club. Whilst Alexander Nübel had departed, re-joining parent club Bayern Munich before being loaned back out to Stuttgart, a new goalkeeper arrived in the form of Köhn.
However, despite being the uncontested No.1 in the first part of the season, a poor start to 2024 saw Majecki be given a chance, which he has taken. Prior to that, the Polish international (one cap), was considering a departure at the end of the season, according to L’Équipe.
Not only is he now likely to remain with Les Monégasques, but there are now discussions over a new deal, which would see Majecki significantly increase his salary. His current deal expires at the end of next season.
