Racism has no place in football. That's why there's always a lot of justified outrage, whenever there are racist incidents on and/or off the pitch.
During the first round match of the DFB-Pokal between Lokomotive Leipzig and Schalke 04, Christopher Antwi-Adjei was racially abused by at least one spectator from the home section - Schalke put out a press statement, strongly condemning the incident.
“First of all, I feel very sorry for Christopher that he has to listen to such words. We condemn this behavior in the strongest possible terms and hope that the person responsible will be found. The fans and members of Schalke 04 have clearly and unambiguously committed themselves to the fight against discrimination and racism in their statutes and mission statement, and as a club and board, we represent these values with the utmost clarity. We stand firmly by Christopher's side”, says Schalke's sporting director Frank Baumann.
The incident happened in the 13th minute of the game, when Antwi-Adjei went out for a throw-in - the referee stopped the game promptly, after Antwi-Adjei and teammate Karaman notified him of what had happened. Sadly, Schalke's winger was additionally booed by some home supporters whenever he was on the ball.
“It's very disappointing to have to experience something like this nowadays. It's not right. I hope that this person will think twice about what they said”, said Antwi-Adjei after the game.
Another racist incident stopped play during the match between RSV Eintracht and Kaiserslautern:
The stadium announcer in Potsdam said one of Kaiserslautern's substitutes had been the target of racist abuse - afterwards, both sets of fans were heard chanting “Nazis out”.
Kaiserslautern's headcoach Torsten Lieberknecht called this incident “a real shame, since so many people in Potsdam tried to celebrate a football fest today. The culprit should get a justified punishment for his words today.”
